The Music Within – by Rae: Tasty Tuesday

June 12, 2012 Love, Tasty Tuesdays 2 Comments

You know that feeling you get when you realize that you’re connecting with a song? Good, bad, happy or sad-no matter the topic, but you look up after closing your eyes and belting out the words that ring true to your heart and u say, “Damn, that’s my song!” Well I want that feeling again.  I want to connect to a song. … Continue Reading

R.S.V.P. for F02 Music – It’s all Fresh Air

Ok, maybe I’m a little biased…so sue me BUT I’ve been “Baking Soda Fresh” since 2010.

I met the F02 crew back in 2010, with the break of the 2nd installment of the legendary Flowcase, and the soon to be dropped mixtape of @SheIsHipHop aka Candis. With such success over the last year with Candis being nominated as UMA’s Best Female Rapper of the Year, their recent interview with Sway on MTV, and the drop of the first all female Flowcase; it was time for the entire F02 fam to make their move. … Continue Reading

Grace Jones – The epitome of FIERCE: Black History Month Highlights

February 23, 2012 Education & Business No Comments

“I’ve always been a rebel. I never do things the way they’re supposed to be done. Either I go in the opposite direction or I created a new direction for myself, regardless of what the rules are or what society says.” – Grace Jones

Edgy, no frills, no rules…she was the first person who I knew pushed the envelope in music and fashion. Known to the world as Grace Jones, she’s the daughter of an Apostolic clergyman born May 19 in Kingston, Jamaica. At the age of 12, she moved to Syracuse and made it her business to find her way out.  Her dream was to always be an actress, after taking a theatre class in High School. Using modeling as a way to pay the bills, she became tired of the restrictions within New York’s modeling world, shaved her head, eyebrows and escaped the rules to live in Europe. It was there where she would make a career for herself as a model, and soon thereafter gain more notoriety as a musician.  Her image was developed by Jean-Paul Goude, a world renown artist. An androgynous look, Grace has no problems playing the role of man and woman.  In the world of pop culture, she is most known for being the muse of Andy Warhol. In 1977, she was signed to Island Records, after gaining headway in the New York nighclub scene.  Although her music career was slow in the 1970′s, she regained her momentum in the 80′s with the opportunity to focus on more new wave and experimental tracks. Her most popular album, Nightclubbing would release her 1981 hit, “Pull up to the bumper”, which was remade by “Dancehall Queen”, Patra in the late 90′s.  Her music career spawned a fruitful acting career, where she is most widely known for her role as Helen Strangé in the 1990′s classic Boomerang, as well as her role in Conan the destroyer with Arnold Schwarzenegger. … Continue Reading

Our Greatest Love of All

It was almost like the world stood still.

First I got it in a BBM. I didn’t believe it so I checked Twitter. Twitter seems to be more reliable than the news these days. One of my followers retweeted, a tweet (seriously alliteration) from the Associated Press. At that moment, I knew it was true. I turned to CNNfor a final confirmation and my heart skipped a beat.  It was so surreal. The aura changed, not just in my home; but everywhere. It was somber. As I read through my timeline, I could feel the sadness. We’d lost one of our own once again, and to an untimely death.

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on August 9, 1963 in Newark, NJ.  I’m sure at some point her mom, legendary gospel artist Cissy Houston, knew that Whitney would be a woman of greatness, but maybe not of this magnitude.  Treading the usual path as most African American singers, she began in the church.  At 15, while working to obtain a recording deal, she was discovered by a photographer, which landed her the opportunity to be the first African American featured on the cover of Seventeen magazine. At 19 in 1983, she was discovered by Clive Davis, and immediately signed to Arista Records. It was at this moment where her career would skyrocket to a place where no one could catch her. Ms. Houston’s resume is long, with too many accolades to name. Some of her career highlights include:

  • Having over 170 million albums sold
  • Her first two album produced consecutive number 1′s surpassing the Beatles and the Bee Gees
  • She holds the Guinness Book World record of being the most rewarded female artist holding six Grammys, two Emmys, 16 Billboard Music Awards, 23 American Music Awards, and was named Female Artist of the Decade at the 2000 Soul Train Music Awards
  • Her rendition of  ”The Star Spangled Banner” at XXV Superbowl became a classic performance, and a Top 20 hit in 1991
  • She was the first artist to rally in getting Nelson Mandela freed, and helping him in his presidential campaign for South Africa

Media has already began reviving her past. It’s not how I want to remember her. There are so many classic moments, her songs are the soundtrack of my childhood. Her performances, timeless. She was a woman I admired greatly. I always wished that I could sing like her, but we’re all blessed with gifts; the gift of song was not one of them.  Her beauty and poise, was one of sheer elegance, her presence would always light up the room. She made an impact, and left her mark of greatness on our hearts to live forever.

RIP Whitney…we will always love you….Vee
