There’s Power in SWEAT – Wellness Wednesday
Yesterday, I took some time away from my laptop and watched Our America with Lisa Ling. In this episode, she visited the Lakota Indians in South Dakota and uncovered the impoverished conditions on the reservation, known among the tribe as “the rez”. In her journey, she was afforded the opportunity to take part in Native American tradition “the sweat house”. The sweat house is where those who are dealing with stress, grief, problems or just need a spiritual cleansing, come to “sweat” out the negative energy, become one with the land and detox their bodies. With the use of heat and salt stones - amidst a tent constructed of mud, raw animal hide, cedar bark, and other materials - tribe members pray, share their troubles and sweat. It’s the most ancient form of spiritual cleansing known on this Earth.
What I took from this is that there’s power in sweat. Is everyone going to find a reservation and hope to join a tribe’s sweat house? No. However, exercising is one the easiest ways to sweat. In my journey to weight loss, I learned how therapeutic just a simple walk around my neighborhood can be. When I go for a run, the “therapy” is maximized. I come back home drenched in sweat, but ready to take on my day. My levels of productivity are at an all-time high, and I’m in peaceful disposition. It’s an overall great feeling.
I challenge you all to get out and sweat! Having a bad day? Instead of hitting the local after work spot for a drink – which I admit is a nice temporary fix – why not go for a run, power walk or use that gym membership you’ve been letting go to waste. There are plenty of classes that you can sign up for….OR, you can come out to our SWEAT Block Party in Harlem (PS 92 Schoolyard) on July 21. Of course it’s a shameless plug, but my point is to let you know there are options.
There is definitely power in sweat. So when you felt the weight of the world on your shoulders, go and get your sweat on! I promise you’ll recognize the issues aren’t as great as they seem.
Peace and wellness…
