Hoboken – Dr. X’s remedy for your life

June 5, 2012 Lifestyle, Mind & Soul No Comments

Sometimes life can feel like Hoboken.

Stay with me on this one!

Hoboken.

Ever have one of those days where you get an equal amount of good and bad news?

In a matter of hours, I found out my suspended driver’s license had been restored after a year, and that the doctoral program I had moved to another town to be closer to had rejected me.

Hoboken.

You want to get across the river to the city, but you’ve got to go down a bit just to get directly to your destination.

Or do you?

Can you swim?

Aldous Huxley once said, “experience is not what happens to a man; it is what a man does with what happens to him.”

I could have given up on driving forever when the DMV told me the steps I’d have to take to restore my driving privileges. But I know I have a family and friends to take care of, so I did what I had to in order to get my license back. I could have said screw doctoral programs because this one rejected me. But I pressed on, retook my GRE and got a much higher score than before.

I’ll ask you again, can you swim?

It may take you longer. It’s dirty. And people will look at you and say “that shit cray”, but when you make it to the other side, cold, wet, tired. You can say that you’ve done something not many people have.

The shortest distance from “point A” to “point B” is a straight line.

Today’s prescription: Fvck obstacles.
