Peer to Peer file sharing (Life after LimeWire)

October 29, 2010 Tech World 6 Comments

Unfortunately LimeWire has been shut down by the courts. You can read all about it here. Some people are wondering  what to do next.

Well you can always try purchasing your music and software and movies like a lot of Itunes users. If that’s just not your cup of tea, ( I know it isn’t ) then let me just inform you of a couple of other options.

First, let’s just go through the top 3 forms or file sharing:

1. Bit Torrent

2 Lime-wire (well it used to be)

3. Shareaza

Now let me list a couple of alternatives

1. Ares

2. Frostwire

3. Bearshare

If you have any of the 3 programs and you don’t have any good anti-virus software, your computer is a small mess.

What I am going to do is give you a couple of suggestions to help keep up your healthy habit of downloading and file sharing.

Ok. Let’s be clear; if you’re using file sharing programs, then you need without a doubt an ACTIVE antivirus program.
File sharing has evolved over the years. We moved from the good ol’ days of napster to kaaza to lime wire and now that lime wire is pretty much in the crapper…

Ugly Girls > Pretty Girls (Who’s the Bigger Freak?)

October 28, 2010 Question of the Day 9 Comments

Before I even get into this brutally honest convo, let me start by saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So when I use the terms “ugly” and “pretty” they’re all relative. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s begin…

The other day my co-worker and I got into a conversation about “pretty” girls. If you recall my “Are Pretty Girls Wack in the Sack?” post, you’ll know that when I use that adjective I’m not necessarily referring to someone’s physical attributes but a specific type of woman (or, in the case of the ladies, a guy).

Anyway, we had just finished interviewing former video vixen turned rapper Gloria Velez (two weeks prior we were doing the same with Lola Monroe f.k.a Angel Lola Luv #FTW) and found it refreshing that two beautiful woman could have such nice personalities.

I’ve actually had similar conversations with other guys before about “pretty” girls and the general consensus is that they don’t have the best personalities. So when you come across and extremely hot girl that’s cool as sh*t, it’s usually quite surprising. As much as we wish things would be different, most people judge a book by its cover and when that cover is a model-like body you’re usually expecting either an airhead or a stuck-up chick.

#JustBeingHonest

In fact, a while back my boy Carl did a post about how pretty chicks just aren’t funny (sorry, I couldn’t find the link), which furthered the belief amongst a lot of men that the more attractive the woman the less personality she has. The thinking is because of their looks, “pretty” girls never really had to do much to get attention, as guys always chased after them and things were just handed to her. Yes, it’s a big generalization but there’s probably some truth to it.

From there, my boy commented that, “An ugly girl has to have a good personality, otherwise she’s f*cked.” He was basically saying that if you were someone that was “genetically unfortunate” (© GangStarrGirl) and had a bad personality on top of that, there was no way people were going to mess with you. His theory was that “ugly” folks usually build up strong personalities (funny, nice, etc.) to compensate for what they lack in looks, while an attractive person with a bad attitude will get more passes because of their looks. (i.e. A “pretty” person getting out of a speeding ticket).

Think about that one for a second and you might see some truth. I’ve seen it plenty of times where a dime drops a tissue and men run from across the street to retrieve it for her, while the butter face chick drops her groceries right in front of a dude and he just stares as her oranges roll down the block.

As with any discussion about women amongst men, the subject of sex came up and I explained the counterpoint to my “Are Pretty Girls Wack in the Sack?” post and that’s the belief that the stereotypical “ugly” girls (and even BBWs) are usually the biggest freaks. I find that to be true for two main reasons:

1) Chances are they have sex less often and are backed up. Since they don’t know when next time they’ll get some again will be, they give it their all anytime they get laid. #Kudos

2) Again, they have to be good in bed because they’re making up for what they’re lacking in looks. Besides, if a dude is embarrassed by your looks or just that shallow, you better be putting it down in the bedroom for him to want to come back for seconds (and thirds…).

I actually had a conversation about point No. 2 during an interview with porn star Brian Pumper a few weeks ago. He agreed that “ugly girl pucci is the best” and said that he got a couple homeboys that “got a baby by an ugly b*tch.” (His words not mine).

I mean, we’ve all seen genetically unfortunate people walking around pregnant or with kids so somebody is sleeping with them and it’s obviously not for their looks. So that gives more credence to my belief that they’re either freaks in the bedroom or have great personalities.

At the end of the day, the latter is what matters most. Despite the shallow nature of this post thus far, it all leads to this point: Personality trumps looks any day.

After my co-worker and I discussed the pros and cons of “ugly” girls vs. “pretty” girls, I posed the following: Would you rather have a pretty wife that had a bad attitude, or a woman that wouldn’t win any beauty pageants but treated you right as your wife? The answer was a no-brainer: I’ll take the woman with the winning personality for a lifetime, Alex. #JeopardyReference

While men are generally visual creatures that think with what’s between their legs more than what’s between their ears, a true thinking man understands looks can last but so long. God forbid your arm candy wife with the stank attitude gets in an accident where her beauty gets taken away from her in a flash. All you’d be left with is an ugly b*tch—inside and out.

Have you found that “genetically unfortunate” people are usually bigger freaks than their “pretty” counterparts? Are you just as surprised when you meet an attractive person who has a great personality? Do you expect attractive people to be stuck-up and have stank attitudes? How often do you judge a book by its cover? Do you find that attractive people usually get away with things easier? Would you sleep with someone that wasn’t the most attractive physically but had a great personality? Would you be ashamed to have a child by an “ugly” person? Would you rather have a spouse that was attractive but had a bad attitude, or an unattractive mate that treated you right? How important are looks to you?

Speak your piece…

A great quote for a perfect world…

“Maybe we should develop a Crayola bomb as our next secret weapon. A happiness weapon. A beauty bomb. And every time a crisis developed, we would launch one. It would explode high in the air – explode softly – and send thousands, millions, of little parachutes into the air. Floating down to earth – boxes of Crayolas. And we wouldn’t go cheap, either – not little boxes of eight. Boxes of sixty-four, with the sharpener built right in. With silver and gold and copper, magenta and peach and lime, amber and umber and all the rest. And people would smile and get a little funny look on their faces and cover the world with their imagination.”

Dapa Don: Lyrics and Style Untouchable

October 27, 2010 Feature 2 Comments

Article written by Vaughny for Da Stage Magazine

It’s true that the “tweets is watchin;” [s/o to 1st Wonder] and I’d seen many-a-tweet involving this kat from BK. In thinking of the best ways to describe what I’ve recently experienced from him musically, the words smooth, energetic, confident…OK, just crazy swag (I haven’t retired the word yet) come to mind. His lyrics will sway you, make you throw-up ya stank face and bounce but he is more than just a lyrical king…check and see…Dapa Don

[DS: Give us some background on Dapa Don]

Brooklyn, NY born & raised
Influences - Being that my music is mainly hip hop infused with a myriad of quite a few genres, my influences come from many places as common as Jay-Z, Biggie, LL or Kanye, to as far left as Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix or Janis Joplin. I do appreciate all genres but my main influences come from Rap and R&B.
Inspiration – Selfishly fame used to motivate me or just the accomplished feeling that most artists if not all desperately strive for. But my inspiration now is my daughter. She’s everything to me and the reason I work so hard. She’s not meant to have a meager existence so I strive to have her live in abundance.
Ultimate goal – Aww man if I ever get a chance to do a track wit Hov I can die a happy man lol but any of the artists I admire that’s my ultimate goal is to work with them. Among a few grammy’s, Billboard awards, Essence, Image, Bet, Soul Train, MTV, you name it I want it lol

[DS: Name of current project]

“The War of the Roses” which is slated for an early November Release

[DS: Who have you worked with?]

As a songwriter I’ve been blessed to work with many artists as well as in my own solo endeavors. On “The War of the Roses” I’m blessed to have such talents as Lou$Tar, Maserati Poe, WinkLoc, Devynity, Chyna, Mousey, Mello Soul, AlSO, Troy Ave, Mz. Koo, Ms. Poppin as well as some great up and coming producers. I’m really a fan of the unsigned artists sticking together because the movement we are about to bring will be crazzzy

[DS: How do you create?]
Simple. I get a track whether its sent to me or I choose it, and write whatever the beat says to me. I really can’t force words onto a track that doesn’t have what I’m writing about playing

[DS: If you had the opportunity to change the direction of music, would you do it? If so, what would you do?]

I’m doing that now with my band Brooklyn Bred Muzik. I just wanna bring back the instrumentation and musicianship to the forefront as did the Roots, or Mint Condition. Hip hop can become so monotonous that a band seems like an anomaly but my guys are extremely talented and are accomplished musicians within their own right. So I will be doin’ a live album with them after this current project but that will hopefully help usher in a new plateau of hip hop as we know it.

Some facts we should know about Dapa Don include….

I’m very serious about my craft & my business, but I’m not a robot. I love life especially wit all the people we lost this year most recently Huddy 6 aka Huddy Combs. You have to appreciate the now while your here, you never know when your last breath will be, so the most important fact I’d say is I joke alooooot and I’m very approachable. I feel my fans and other colleagues will appreciate that more because your more humanized that way.

A pioneer in his own right, his quest to bring true underground music to the forefront is evident. With slick lyricism, a passion to platform pure unadulterated music and a style unmatched, Dapa Don is definitely a Brooklyn Bred artist to keep on your radar. A quick blink of the eye and Dapa might snatch ya wife, ya mistress but definitely the number 1 spot.

Where can you find Dapa Don?

“I aint hard to find” lol love sayin’ that but def check me out on Twitter (I def have a human side to me and just love life and love to laugh) www.Twitter.Com/Dapadon, www.FaceBook.com/DapaDon, www.myspace.com/Dapadon718
