There’s Nothing Wrong With Being Tough…

May 31, 2010 Sports No Comments

After watching the first set of basketball games since seemingly light years ago, there was a definite contrast in a few of the games played. Sure, you might say in one the underdog team finally one a game, where the other laid down. Yes, you are correct. However, for the greater good of the league, and a key ingredient for any team that wishes to be worth a damn should take heed to what I saw in Sunday night’s game vs. Saturday’s.

Sunday’s game had two teams willing to lay it on the line, whereas in Saturday’s game there was only one.

I have a feeling that over the course of this off-season, Dwight Howard is going to receive his fair share of criticism on how he played during the 2010 NBA Playoffs. The man tabbed as “Superman” for his performance in the Slam Dunk Contest has been nothing but “Clark Kent” in the post-season. However, what was alarming wasn’t the fact of him not having a consistent post move, hell we already knew that. It was the fact that he, the one dubbed the best big man in the league by many pundits (not me) has not been able to own the paint at all. Save from a few games in Atlanta, Howard hasn’t been able to do it even in the Charlotte series. Boston’s frontline has bullied him, he’s never looked comfortable, and has no idea on Earth what he’s supposed to do when he gets the ball down there.

That my friends, is a problem.

However, we can even look past that. We can look at Rondo’s “Pete Rose slide” for the loose ball that was under Jason Williams legs in the 2nd quarter of last night’s game. That’s a phenomenal play. Why? Because it takes a lot of audacity for someone to do that. Past that, Pierce has owned the Magic’s swingmen and has no fear of Barnes, Pietrus, and Vince Carter. Orlando has shown that the only two people on their team that plays with no fear is Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick. Yes, you heard me clearly on the Redick part.

In Sunday’s game, Amare Stoudemire proved to us that he actually has a heartbeat. I’m not going to crown the man and give him as much praise as some have given him in the last 12 hours but, he played ball on the offensive end and made the Lakers’ bigs pay. I guess that’s all you can ask for from him, because he’s clearly shown that he’s not going to do that rebounding the ball and playing defense. Therefore, who is the most important people for Phoenix?

Robin Lopez and Jared Dudley.

We already know what Amare can’t do, same with Nash, Grant Hill, Jason Richardson, and the rest of the Suns team. Robin and Jared are the only two players that can make something happen by sheer tenacity, and that’s something that all basketball fans can appreciate.

However, the moral of the story is this, it takes a mentally and physically tough team to win in the NBA. That’s why when Ron Artest joined the Lakers, it made them truly scary. No one “feard” the Lakers, the blueprint was just that you’ve got to muscle them and be tougher. Ron changes that to a degree, however, I think Boston has more headcases (I’m looking at you Rasheed) and people that will mentally punch you in the mouth that Boston is the cream of the crop when it comes to toughness. Let’s hope all of this culminates in one tough ass NBA Finals, where the two toughest teams in the NBA clash.

Travel Do’s in holiday season

Most of the time when you hear about traveling around the holidays, most think Thanksgiving and Christmas. Although those are the heaviest travel days of the year, people forget the other holidays: Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Here are some Travel Do’s to help you on your travels year-long.

Book early!

The days of waiting until the last minute for cheaper prices have gone the way of the dinosaur! Many more people are traveling in general, that means planes and trains are full and these companies have no incentive to lower prices at the last minute. You should book your tickets as soon as your travel dates are firm.

Travel early or late!

If you can be flexible with your travel dates you can travel cheaper and avoid some of the travel headaches that come with the peak season. For example, instead of traveling the day before Thanksgiving travel two days before. Hotwire and Expedia offer tools that allow you to check for the least expensive travel dates around the holiday. Even if you don’t book with them you can use the information to make your travel plans. You can also consider traveling on the actual day of the holiday or choose early-morning, late-night or red-eye flights for lower prices.

Pack light and keep questionable items in your checked luggage!

As a sign of the times, airport security is much more stringent and they are not likely to let you get away with bringing questionable items on board the plane. To avoid delays at check-in, follow TSA guidelines (www.tsa.gov ) and try to only bring on-board items you really need during the flight. When in doubt check it!

Arrive early!

If you must travel on peak travel days, please keep this suggestion at the top of your list. Get to the airport at least 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international flights. You used to be able to go to the front of the line if your flight was boarding but don’t count on it now! Plus you can actually enjoy your time in the airport as many terminals have lots of shops and interesting things to occupy your time.

Call your airline for up-to-the-minute information!

You should call your airline at least 6 hours before your departure time to check for any delays. And, in the case that you are already at the airport and there are delays or cancellations, get on the phone! You can avoid the long lines and give yourself a better shot at making alternate travel plans if you make the changes with the reservations department over the phone.

DanceAfrica 2010

If you’re making NYC your destination for the holiday weekend (a girls vacation to celebrate the opening of SATC2?) or, like me, you’re staying local for the holiday weekend, be sure to head to the borough of Brooklyn (We go HARD) for the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s (BAM) longest running program, DanceAfrica.

Created in 1977 to celebrate African culture, DanceAfrica has become a Memorial Day institution marked by films, performances, art exhibits, and the DanceAfrica Bazaar all celebrating the African Diaspora.

Highlights of the year’s festival include:

Sex, Okra and Salted Butter (Film) – A comedy from Chad that explores what happens when a traditional Africa husband’s world is turned upside down by his wife’s affair and his son’s secret love life.  Showing Saturday, May 29

African Rhythms/American Echoes (Art) – Select artists from Africa create a unique dialog using their works along side a work of an American artist from BAM’s collection.  Through June 19.

DANCE! - Performances by Pamodzi Dance Troupe (Zambia), Dallas Black Dance Theatre (Dallas), Illstyle & Peace Productions (Philadelphia), BAM/Restoration DanceAfrica Ensemble (Brooklyn). May 28-31.

A K. Parris Post: After Club Eats at 4 am…BAD IDEA

Dieting

How many of us try to eat healthy on a daily basis? *hand raised* Now. How many of us actually eat healthily on a daily basis, or even a weekly basis? *hand slowly shrinks down behind back* Right. Most of us don’t, yours truly included. And there can be many excuses..I mean, reasons (ahem) for this. It could be that you are too busy to prep food from home, so you grab something not so healthy en route to your next destination. It could be that you needed something fast and pre prepared. Or, it could just be that dammit, you love the double cheeseburger from McDonalds, you were leaving the club at 4 am, and that was what you went and got, dammit! LOL.

The Ex Files: I Called Her Yesterday

May 26, 2010 The Ex Files 3 Comments

So someone requested I share some stories so here it is! The Ex Files.

NOTE: I am in a happy healthy relationship with someone that is NOT the characters in the Ex Files but these stories might strike a key w/ others.  Blogging was therapy at the time, so enjoy!

Oh the “how-have-you-been-let’s-hang-out” call. you know the one I’m talking about; It’s been about 3-4 months and you break down and reach JUST to see what’s up w/ the other person. Not trying to jump their bones or anything, just curious. So…

I called her yesterday.

“Sup,” she answered tired, hungry and drained.

“Long day”, I say.

Yea [insert long diatribe about her crappy day regardless of how nice it was outside]

Damn, girl don’t worry [insert uplifting words, witty remarks meant for a smile..]

She smiles, her mood changes, what are u up to? she asks.

Askin’ you to come eat Thai w/ me!

Ooooh Thai, yay! Let’s…she says eagerly

Dope, meet me at…

Oh, wait..I uh, got something, uh I, uh, gotta do, she remembers nervously.

damn sounds fun, anyone I know? (I reply in my head)

oh word? well another time perhaps, if u busy and all, (I really say)

No, it’s not that, just…

Another dude you seeing naked on a regualr basis, my replacement, I get it, all good, do you. You like me but only until you’ve played the field a bit. (I say in my head)

You don’t gotta explain. Do yo’ thang and hit me up whenever your free, I say w/ false confidence and slight indignaton.

..well, um..ok..I guess i’ll see u later

Not really, I got things to do, and actually took some time outta my busy day to accomodate you. But I can’t be waitin on you to figure out I’m actually pretty dope (I say in my head)

Sure. Later., I say half heartedly.
