Cheap Tourism Advice: The M5 Bus

August 31, 2009 Travel 3 Comments

The best bus for Tourists and New Yorkers alike, to see the sights in Manhattan, is the M5 Bus. Best of all, it only costs $2.25!! Two Dollars and Twenty-Five Cents!

During the day, until 6pm, it makes all express stops. Express stops means the same stops that the train would make at the main thoroughfares (cross streets). In this article, I highlight some of the main ones.

This bus takes you from 157th Street and Broadway all the way up in Washington Heights (Presbyterian Hospital) down to Houston Street and Broadway in the East Village.

The way that it travels downtown is primarily down Broadway from the beginning until Columbus Square/59th Street. Bus stops along Broadway also transfers to the 1 train at the main thoroughfares (cross streets) until Columbus Square/59th Street.

After it goes past Central Park South along 59th Street, it turns down 5th Avenue. (Ahh, the Shopping!!) At 57th Street: Saks Fifth Avenue, The Apple Store, Tiffany’s, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior; all of the high-end shops, if you dare to get off there.

It continues down past St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Rockefeller Center. Then, after 42nd Street and Bryant Park, you can shop some more at Lord and Taylors (One of my personal Faves!)

When you approach 34th Street, there’s more shopping, but best of all, The Empire State Building! (A strong recommendation.) Sharing the same corner is the Heartland Brewery. There, you can taste different variations of beers. (I’m a lush) Or you can stay on the bus until the last stop. Then, you are officially in the East Village. You can do more shopping in the small, funky shops. NYU Campuses (New York University) are nearby, so you will see dozens (upon dozens of students) flocking to the ‘hot spots’. You can stay on 8th Street, walk west and go to New York’s famous Gray’s Papaya. (Great Hot Dogs!!)

Please Note: If you are looking for an M5 bus stop during the day, go to a major intersection (cross street) and look for a purple M5 on top of the Bus Stop sign. This means that the bus will stop there. After 6:00pm, it will stop at every M5 stop, Blue, Black, Purple. (Wherever it says M5, it should stop.)

Also, Note: If you are trying to ride back Uptown, the M5 runs on 6th Avenue aka Avenue of the Americas. Then after 59th Street Central Park South, it travels all the way back up Broadway to 157th Street.

If you want to know more about the areas, there will almost always be a smiling New Yorker willing to show you the ropes. It’s my favorite bus, who knows? It may just be me.

Finalities

August 30, 2009 Lifestyle, Mind & Soul 4 Comments

In this life, there are times when we have to decide what’s best for us and those that depend on us. Sometimes, this means severing outside relationships, temporarily or even permanently.

As scary as the latter seems, it’s very important to understand the gravity of these relationships in our lives. To me, this means, take a step back, take a breath and reflect on why certain relationships even exist. Instead of forcing a square peg in a round hole, realize that sometimes we need to let it go.

There is a saying, “Sometimes people are in our lives for a reason, or even a season.” This is so true. The love and respect from those relationships may always remain, but we all must move on. Sometimes that may mean moving apart.

Happiness comes from within, appreciating what we have, not from what we are still searching for.

Builtny.com Custom Laptop Bags

August 28, 2009 Fashion, Tech World No Comments

Is that a bulletproof vest?

Are you going swimming?

WHAT IS THAT?!

Are the questions people ask when they see my bright orange laptop bag from builtny.com

Built bags are made from neoprene, that’s the same thing that wetsuits are made of (nice huh).

I discovered the built company @ the CES back in January and I have been hooked ever since. I love the portability of this bag that comes in two sizes: medium (15inch laptops) and large(17 inch laptops).

The laptop bag has a slim profile and it fits on your back very snug, that makes it great for crowded subways and for being very active. (I ride a bike with mine on.)

If your tired of getting sharp shoulder and neck pains from your current laptop bag (that’s over -packed with things you don’t need anyway) or your tired of leaning to one side when you try to go for a single bag strap look (trying to be cool), then go to www.builtny.com and look up the many variations of back packs laptop sleeves and bags built has to offer.

IM OUT!

What Recession? It’s all in our heads!

Someone mentioned to me this week that if there were no media there would have been no recession.

Radical? Maybe. But there is some ounce of truth here. Perhaps the recession wouldn’t have been quite as severe if we all weren’t glued to CNN’s poor economic reports and outlook. Think about how often in our lives we say, “think positive” or it’s “all about attitude“.  Well, if this is the case, can’t the argument be made that this recession was derived from the public’s fear of spending cash. And further, one can argue that this fear had to be instilled from somewhere, namely our primary source of information: the media.

Speaking purely from the perspective of the real estate market, I have watched prices and activity start to rebound in the last two months. It is no secret that public reports on housing and the recession in general have been on the upswing. The more people hear about other people buying a house, the safer they feel venturing out into the market. Let’s remember when we were kids, and we played that cruel joke with 5 of our friends on the one poor outsider kid. You know the one, where we all look up at the sky and keep doing it until he does. Then of course, we burst out in laughter and a MADE YOU LOOK! Well, isn’t that on a smaller scale what happened with the recession? Did a few unfortunate circumstances get blown into historical proportions because of media inflation? The oldest trick in the real estate book is that you need to generate activity at an open house to make it sell. Realtors to this day hire fillers to make the place look busy and give the impression of heightened buyer interest. This, by default, makes you want the house even more.

While I’m not trying to trivialize the recession, I do think it’s important that we learn from the influence of the media’s bad energy. If everyone says it’s bad, then you’re inclined to believe they’re right. After all, it our innermost instinct to seek outside reassurance or the opinion of an ‘expert’…even if they aren’t proven to be one.

One of my influences in my real estate business is Donald Trump. While many aren’t a fan of his personality or his antics, you cant deny that he is a success story. He is someone we can watch and learn from. Where was Donald during the recession when everyone had backed out of the market? He was out there purchasing real estate. He had easy pickins of the deals he wanted and could afford to turn things away. When questioned about this, he simply said, “The truly successful business people go against the tide”.

So, so very relevant and so very true. As we gradually start to recover, keep in mind that this is a cycle. The medias’ new positive spin could cause us to bounce back sooner and farther than we think. So again, don’t get left in the cold. Grab the last of the ‘recession deals’ out there. Because after all, what goes down…goes right back up!
